Headlight out: bulb, fuse and what to check first
If only one headlight is out, the bulb has most likely burned out. If both went out at the same time, look at the fuses first.
Before you start: Turn the lights off and let the bulb cool. Do not touch the glass of a halogen bulb with bare fingers, because skin oil shortens its life.
What to check first
Low beam or high beam
Switch to high beams. Many cars use separate bulbs for each, so note which one is out.
The bulb
Remove the bulb from the back of the headlight housing. A broken filament or darkened glass confirms it.
The bulb number
Your owner's manual lists it, for example H11 or 9005, or the parts store can look it up by year, make and model.
Fuses
If both sides are out, or a new bulb does not light, check the headlight fuses. The fuse box cover shows which ones they are.
The connector
A melted or corroded plug behind the bulb can also cut power. It can be replaced with a new connector pigtail.
